BSI TO Open Regional Centre In Himachal

The centre will help in conservation and enrichment of biodiversity in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and other neighbouring hill states

India’s one of the oldest institute Botanical Survey of India (BSI), Kolkata will soon open its regional research centre at Nauni in Solan. Arrival of this institute at Solan will help in conservation of many plant species on verge of extinction in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and other areas. Experts from about 128 years old institute, Botanical Survey of India, recently visited Solan and other neighbouring areas. They have given their nod to open its regional centre at Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry premises at Nauni. Dr. Y.S. Parmar University already has earned a unique distinction not only in the country but also in whole of Asia to impart teaching, research and extension education in horticulture, forestry and allied disciplines with Himalayan perspective. According to a research, there are numerous invaluable forest wealth in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and other neighbouring hill states that are on verge of extinction. Herbal plants like jatamasi, brahmakamal, lilium and other plants that were available in plenty in past are nowhere to find now. Kukum, a plant found in Lahaul Spiti has also vanished from the area now. Besides this, it will also be a subject of study that how to conserve and enrich the biodiversity of Himalayan region. Scientists opines that the opening of BSI regional centre at Solan will also help in making a research on the topic of tree species that once were available in plenty in the area and now are have gone totally extinct. Notably, Botanical Survey of India after independence  had opened a centre for Uttarakhand at Dehradun and for North Eastern states at Shillong in Meghalaya. However Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir were lacking this facility. It appears this complaint of Himachal will be soon over.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests has given approval to open regional centre of Botanical Survey of India in Solan. A memorandum of understanding will soon will be signed with Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni in

this regard
