Himachal This Week

The budget session of Himachal assembly is noisy and wavering in movements of yes or no. Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur who declared that he will follow a policy of development instead of just red and green cap fights, has now come to realise that the ground is slippery. He hesitated to follow up Section 118, relaxing ban on land buying by outsiders in Himachal. On opposition protests, he simply posed no indifference to any such proposal. Himachal This Week survey too, showed that 60% respondents are not in favour of land transfer to outsiders. This is not realised that if land is not made available for development and growth how will state develop and provide jobs. Industry workers are unable to get accomodation and they move outside the state to neighboring Punjab and Hariyana to live and work. This is great loss to the state. Again if industrialists or tourism project developers do not find land they will find other states too willing to accomodate the needs. Again we lose and it is not understood by politicians that development needs land, political observers point out.

Chief Minister readily gave in and the issue seems to have died down for the time being. Chief Minister who has good majority of his own should not have bowed down and stood firm on providing essential minimum land for the purpose of development where required, political observers point out. Seraj issue was haunting the ruling party especially since it pertained to CM’s constituency. He prolonged it and ultimately was able to solve it to the satisfaction of both the claimants. To sort out this dilemma without any untoward incident goes to the credit of the BJP. It is high time that CM should act strictly on priority and give targets to officials for solving problems. Take the example of roads where he is facing an embarrassing situation as High Court has asked state on affidavit to submit why there is no improvement and maintenance as charges by the public interest litigants. Why can’t CM show urgency to give relief to people? Politics seems to be going round and round and ground situation is getting stuck on urgent issues.
