Honing Handball Players

In another endeavour to promote sports in Himachal, Divya Himachal brings out the achievements of successful coaches. They have put in hard work to tap and groom young budding sportspersons in various sports. In this series, here comes the name of handball coach Sarit Sharma who not only exceelled as a handball player but is also grooming budding players now as a coach.

htwAfter bringing laurels to the state many times in handball, Sarit Sharma is now coaching young Himachalis. Handball players trained by him are participating at national and international level competitions A multi faceted sports personality, Sarit Sharma is a cricket lover too and is also an umpire of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA). This year, he will train handball players of Government Senior Secondary School, Ladraur in Hamirpur district for which the school administration has urged him to take up the responsibility. Born on January 15, 1962, Sharma was interested keenly in sports since his childhood. During his school days, he realised his attraction for the handball. After graduation, he took admission in NSNIS, Patiala. From 1979 to 1985, he played 11 national handball championships. In junior category, he got selected for the nationals twice, while in senior category, he played six national championships. After becoming a coach, he trained handball players in Kullu, Bilaspur and Hamirpur districts. About 20 trainees have participated in nationals. Under his guidance more than 60 players have got selected for the state level championships. He told that some of his trainees are presently serving in the Indian Army. Besides, he is training players in sub junior, junior and senior categories.

Sanjay Wins Two Golds In Snowboarding

htwThe inmates and staff of the Paradise Children Care Centre, Chowari in Chamba district are in high spirits. Spreading cheer all around is the news from Special Olympics World Winter Games that one of its inmates, Sanjay Kumar, has won two gold medals in snowboard event. Ajay Singh Chambial, general secretary of the centre told HTW that two of its inmates- Kanchan and Sanjay Kumar, had were selected by the Special Olympic Federation of India to take part in world winter games held in Austria from March 14 to 25. The way they are responding to the innovative efforts made by the centre, results were bound to come, said Singh. He also revealed that the centre has already a distinction to its credit while one of its students had won a gold medal in power lifting in Los Angeles games.  He said that he introduced playway method in their study and most of the students were not only excelling in sports but were also doing well in their studies. He had started this noble initiative a decade ago to rehabilitate the disabled children of the district. And now it has indeed started living up to its name and emerging as a ray of hope in the lives of 53 inmates of the centre.

1st Chip Time Marathon In Shimla

On the occasion of World Red Cross Day, Shimla administration is planning to make the Queen of Hills more popular among tourists. For the first time, Chip Time Half Marathon would be organised on May 7, a day before the World Red Cross Day. Apart from run for fun, this time, chip time marathon will be organised for professionals.       This chip would help monitoring the time an athlete takes to complete the race. The half marathon would be in two categories i.e. professional and others. This marathon would be organised under India Run Festival in association with Shimla district administration. Its theme is ‘Daud Shimla’.  Apart from Himachal, athletes from other states would also participate in it.
