Himachal’s Shalu Leads India In Pesapallo World Championship

htwIndian woman team brought laurels to the country by winning bronze medal in 9th Pesapallo World Championship held at Turku in Finland. Pesapallo sport is very new to Himachal but players of this sport in this state proved their mettle. The Indian team captain Shalu Sharma and team member Lakshmi Sharma belong to Sirmaur district. With their consistent efforts, the Indian team managed to reach into semifinal, but despite playing so well they couldn’t make it to the final. But their efforts earned third position for the team. Indian team, from their very first match showed its dominance and defeated teams like Indonesia and Switzerland. India played against Indonesia in first match and won by 8-5. The team defeated Switzerland by 5-3 and entered quarterfinal. They continued their winning streak and reached into the semifinal where it faced defeat from Australia. Shalu Sharma, Indian team captain was awarded as ‘player of the tournament’. Indian team also clinched 4th position in the mixed event. Notably, earlier Himachali team performed exceptionally well in the National Pesapallo Championship held at Pali in Rajasthan. Himachal team had secured 4th position even as it participated in the championship for the first time. After that Shalu Sharma and Lakshmi Sharma were selected for the world championship.

Himachal’s Monika In Deaf Olympics

htwHimachali players have left no stone unturned in the field of sport and they are proving themselves in many events. Even specially-abled players too are shining at national and international levels. Here is another girl from Himachal who is currently participating in the Deaf Olympics being held in Turkey. Monika Verma from Mandi district has proved that disability can never be a hurdle to achieve one’s dreams. Being a deaf since her childhood, Monika has a problem in speaking too. But, these problems couldn’t restrict her from participating in sports and she excelled in shooting. Monika is representing Indian team in the deaf Olympics and participating in shooting event. In 2008-09, Monika had proved her metal in various state and national events of shooting. In 2012 too, she participated in World Championship held at Toronto in Canada. She also participated in Deaf Olympics in 2013 held in Bulgaria. Last year, she won gold medal in national shooting event held in Delhi.

Indian Team For Wushu World Cup

Indian team for Wushu World Cup was selected at Rajiv Gandhi Training Centre, Matiana near Shimla. For the 14th Wushu World Cup, around 50 wushu players from across the country came for selection in the Indian team. After the trials, a total of 18 wushu players have been finalised for this event. These players will go through a training process in China until the championship commences on September 28. Selectors from Wushu Association of India came here from Delhi to finalise the team. For the past one month, players from different states were sweating hard for trials at Matiana.
