Want to uncouple? There’s An App For That

In 2001, when Vandana Shah was thrown out of her husband’s home with just Rs 750 in her bank account, she had no idea that her divorce would take 10 years and a series of lawyers. Disillusioned by the lack of transparency in the legal system, she enrolled for a law degree. Now, an established divorce lawyer in Mumbai, Shah has launched India’s first app on divorce law. Called Divorcekart, it offers instant, round-the clock legal help. While a Divorcekart to shop for legal advice is novel, startups such as Legistofy, LawRato and MyAdvo are already changing the way people seek legal help for divorce. Instead of asking relatives for a “good” lawyer or hunting for somebody in a black coat in a cluttered court complex, spouses can simply seek legal counsel online or over phone and sidestep the social stigma surrounding divorce. Divorcekart has a team of 15 lawyers who will be available on chat or call 24×7, for free for the first three months. For emotional counselling, there is also a support group for divorcees. Shah hopes her app will help women find non-judgmental legal support at a time when even families may not stand by them.
