Cold Wave Sweeps Himachal

Following first snowfall and rains experienced this week across Himachal, cold wave conditions continue to sweep low and mid hills even as tribal areas remained cut off due to heavy snowfall. Many roads were closed for vehicular traffic with people in higher reaches facing electricity and water shortage.

Tourist Inflow Increases

Tourists from neighbouring states have started arriving at various destinations across Himachal to enjoy fresh snowfall of this season. The occupancy at Manali, Dalhousie, Shimla, Dharamshala and other places has increased. Hotels are also receiving advance bookings in the wake of Christmas and New Year celebrations. Heavy rush of tourists was witnessed at Kufri near Shimla that experienced snowfall.

Increased Power Production

Daily electricity requirement in Himachal is of 270 lakh units whereas power produced by different projects of power board has reached 72 lakh units. The hilly state is getting 129 lakh units from neighbouring states through banking. Himachal is also getting 69 lakh units as its share from central sector projects. The power board’s electricity production has increased from 25% to 34%.

61 Roads Closed

Normal life was thrown out of gear due to chilly conditions prevailing in the state following rains and snowfall. In all 61 roads were also closed thus disrupting vehicular traffic in many parts of the state. Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department has pressed machinery, including JCBs, snow cutters and bulldozers to clear these roads. Most of the affected routes were in rural areas.
