Political Curfew In Himachal

Himachal This Week

As the countdown begins for counting of votes for Himachal assembly elections, both the main political parties, the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party, are sticking to their claims making government in this hilly state. However, the political activities are almost zero as all the leaders have seemingly gone to hibernation ahead of counting of votes scheduled for December 18. This hilly state is experiencing political curfew these days.

Whatever may be the claims by political parties, both are skeptical about their claims as the voters have remained completely silent even after one month of the poling, political observers feel. The Congress has staked the claim to accomplish its Mission Repeat with 40 plus assembly seats whereas the BJP is aiming at 50 plus to oust the Congress government from power in Himachal. The Congress and BJP leaders are anxiously waiting for December 18 to know their fate that has been sealed in EVMs since November 9.

None of the parties has convened any meeting before the counting day as Prem Kumar Dhumal is campaigning for party candidates in Gujarat assembly elections and is expected to return after the first phase of polling on December 9. Though he has some programmes in different parts of the state  but there is no official information about party meeting. Virbhadra Singh is also expected to return on December 10 after his visit to Kerala.

The state Congress has held parleys with some of the independent candidates to seek their support in case the need arises but no party meeting has been planned. Meanwhile the state secretariat presents a deserted look waiting for the new government.
