Hitting Tourism

The police resorting to caning at McLeodganj was not an effort to contain law and order situation but was a strict action without giving it a thought. Tourists who faced lathi charge will find difficult to forget Himachal’s this gift. The administration has enhanced problems of police whose working is already under scanner. The cops can’t be so cruel in the backdrop of tourism potential on New Year eve. This picture will not in any way boost tourism sector in this hilly state. The present government should put in place the system in place after classifying tourism activities. We can understand compulsions of the police and lack of training for handing such occasions but such disturbance on happy occasions is lowering Himachal’s image. It also poses a question over infrastructure development and preparations. The manifold increase in number of tourists can’t be termed as law and order problem to hand over to the police. The government must take initiatives before tourism turns into a crowd. When will be understand the requirements of tourists?  Tourists are visiting Himachal by ignoring lack of facilities and other shortcomings thus boosting state’s economy. The state needs to understand the message behind increasing number of young tourists. We can neither allow them to lose nor tolerate hooliganism but such norms can not implemented by resorting to canning. Himachal needs to exhibit management, infrastructure, entertainment, security and decent police behaviour besides alertness if the state wants to expand its tourism sector. We also need to interact politely and show good conduct if tourists don’t complain about traffic jams in Kasauli and undertake arduous journey to Rohtang. Tourists enjoying at McLeodganj on New Year eve were gaining energy for the coming year. Special programmes can be organised on such occasion with active participation of hospitality sector, transport operators, beopar mandals and administration. Auditoriums can be constructed at all tourist and religious destinations for holding programmes by local artists whereas open spaces should be developed for big programmes.
