Hindu Culture Should Be Taught In School

Oblivious of the essence of Hinduism, today’s young generation doesn’t take pride in its own religion. This is due to the apathy of our so called secular governments which have been perpetually ignoring the inclusion of Hinduism as an academic subject in schools since independence. Doubtlessly, in democracy religion is a personal matter not a state subject, but it is also wrong to deny the basic right of an individual to know about his own religion in the name of secularism.
Leaning towards western culture, youth of contemporary India is losing faith in Hindu way of life and consequently they do not believe in family values, which are our strengths. Besides this, tackling the menace of corruption is also one of the biggest challenges for our country. The obvious reason for this degeneration is that the two basic institutions of an individual namely family and school where one learns to lead the righteous path are not playing their role properly in character building. In the endeavour of attaining high profile professions for their children, some overambitious parents forget to inculcate family values in them. Similarly, the result oriented evaluation system in schools lacks in providing moral values. Therefore, from politician to bureaucrat and from businessman to employee, every third person has become self-centred. Undoubtedly, each subject taught in school is significant to develop the individual as a professional, but acquiring the knowledge of Hinduism is equally important to develop the conscientious attitude. If Islam can be taught in Muslim countries and Christianity can be a part of curriculum in American schools, then why do Indian schools hesitate in teaching Hinduism? Our governments have a misconception that teaching Hinduism would lead to communal disturbances in the country. But we should not forget that it is only Hindus who have embraced peoples across all the religions, irrespective of their dubious designs. During the trials in the courts, witnesses are made to swear our Holy book Gita before their statements in the hope that they will speak truth in front of the judge.
But how could anyone expect them to be truthful if they have not gone through this book. Ironically today we don’t want to address this serious issue. On one hand our system wants every Hindu to believe in religion and on the other it doesn’t want to inculcate religious and moral values in the children during school. Notably, we have to understand that the impact of schooling never disappears from the memories of an individual. Moreover, the business of some self-acclaimed messengers of God have become disgrace to Hindus. Gaining popularity day by day, these messengers are playing with the emotions of innocuous people who join the gatherings in religious fervour, but they feel deceived and lose faith in Hinduism when they happen to know about the real character of their gurus. The reason why numerous educated people become easy victim to these thugs is that during childhood they have been taught everything pertaining to materialistic world but not a single thing about religion and spirituality which can make them complete personalities. Therefore we earnestly need to address this issue and start some special classes on Hinduism in schools, so that every Hindu would start admiring the beauty of Hinduism.
