Himachal This Week

Himachal’s annual plan promises progress and this year too it was no exception as it has been fixed at Rs 6300 crore. And elected legislators too have listed their priorities that have included concerns of common people in their respective areas. The MLAs also understand that increasing number of medical institutes will only be useful when they have sufficient medical and para medical staff. Who will understand the situation of hospitals in Kangra district in the backdrop of Medical council of India’s proposed visit to Chamba Medical College? How long the doctors and nurses of Palampur and Dharamshala will justify their responsibility towards patients even if they save Chamba Medical College? This point has been raised by many MLAs before the government.

Surprisingly, only buildings, offices, schools, colleges and other institutions are construed to be indicators of development and progress. All MLAs expressed concern whereas one can hope for a better future if MLA Ramesh Dhawala talks about water conservation. It also needs to be understood that educational standards should be raised rather than treading the traditional path of expanding schools and colleges. Numerous opportunities can be explored through syllabus as Shimla Rural MLA Vikrmaditya Singh advocated strengthening of arts college.

Why not MLAs pleaded for establishing College of Defence Studies and Sports College, political observers question. Meaning of education and self employment will change if Nagrota Suriyan college is converted into a centre for fishery study and water sports. Chintpurni MLA hinted at available opportunities in setting up of mega food park and fishery food park whereas other MLAs could also have sought schemes like IT, entertainment and science parks. None of the MLAs sought accountability from agriculture and horticulture universities on research work. Similar was the case on other issues like menace of monkeys, stray animals and wild animals.

Notably MLAs stressed the need to promote tourism sector but parking problem is staring at entire Himachal. This issue needs priority in upcoming state budget. Numerous area based concerns were raised by different MLAs but Himachal’s vision looked like a traditional demand charter to be fulfilled within a limited budget, political observers opine.
